child & Adolescent ADHD ASsessments
Understand your child’s attention and behaviour, not just a label
Every child is different, and inattention or hyperactivity can show up for all kinds of reasons. A proper diagnosis takes more than a classroom observation or a quick questionnaire.
Our psychologists build a full picture of your child using structured clinical interviews, validated rating scales, and input from the people who know your child best, including their teachers.
Signs of ADHD
What ADHD can look like in kids and teens
ADHD presents differently depending on age, personality, and gender. These are some of the most common patterns we see in the children and adolescents we assess.
Inattention and difficulty focusing
Sustaining attention on schoolwork or instructions takes real effort. Important details are often missed, even in tasks your child genuinely cares about.
Hyperactivity and restlessness
Sitting still through a lesson or a meal feels uncomfortable. There’s often a constant pull to move, fidget, or find something to do.
Impulsivity in words and actions
Acting or speaking before thinking through the consequences. This can affect friendships, classroom behaviour, and how your child is perceived by others.
Trouble with organisation and time
Remembering homework, packing a bag, or finishing a task on time is a daily struggle. Deadlines other kids manage easily can feel unreachable.
Big emotional reactions
Frustration or disappointment can hit harder and last longer than expected. Calming back down often takes more time than it does for peers.
Symptoms that look like something else
ADHD frequently overlaps with anxiety, learning difficulties, or autism. These co-occurring presentations can mask ADHD or delay an accurate diagnosis for years.
Who we assess
ADHD assessments for every age and presentation

Children (Ages 4 to 12)
Undiagnosed ADHD in the early years shapes how a child experiences school, friendships, and their own self-esteem. An early assessment opens the door to support before frustration sets the tone.

Adolescents (Ages 12 to 17)
Secondary school assumes a level of self-management many teenagers with undiagnosed ADHD simply haven’t developed. An assessment can explain the gap between effort and outcome.

Girls
Many girls learn to mask their symptoms long before anyone notices something’s wrong. Quiet inattention and internalised anxiety are easy to overlook without the right clinical eye.

Why Moi Clinic?
A safe space for mental health support
For over 30 years, families across Melbourne have brought us the same underlying question: is this ADHD, or is something else going on? We treat that question with the care it deserves, rather than rushing toward an answer.
A diagnosis means little if it doesn’t change how a child’s week actually unfolds. That is the standard every assessment is held to, supported by reasonable adjustments and paced sessions where a child needs them.
Our child ADHD Assessment Process
What to expect from your child’s ADHD assessment
Our process is designed to feel safe, unrushed, and deeply personal. We walk beside you from your first enquiry to ongoing support, every step of the way.
01
Intake & Relationship Building
We gather developmental and family history and clarify the referral question. Where relevant, we request school reports and teacher questionnaires ahead of ADHD assessment sessions.
02
Personalised Assessment Process
Across one to two sessions, we combine structured interviews, standardised rating scales from multiple informants, and functional evaluation, with the pace adjusted to suit your child.
03
Report Writing & Feedback
We prepare a written report aligned with DSM-5-TR criteria, followed by a feedback session to walk through what the findings mean for your child’s daily life.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
We recommend assessing from age 5. From that point, the earlier the better. Starting school around this age also means teachers can provide valuable input on how your child is functioning in the classroom, adding another layer of insight to the assessment.
Getting a diagnosis sooner means the right support can be put in place sooner, giving your child the best chance to thrive at school, in friendships, and in daily life.
If your child is under 5 and you’re noticing signs, get in touch. Our psychologists can advise on the most appropriate timing for your child’s situation.
A GP referral is not always required to book an intake.
If you are seeking a Medicare rebate, your GP or paediatrician may need to provide a referral under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Contact us and we can advise on what applies to your situation.
Where relevant, yes. School reports and teacher questionnaires can add useful context, and we request these as part of the assessment process where appropriate.
This depends on your child’s age, complexity, and the breadth of the referral question. A straightforward assessment typically involves two to three appointments, including intake and feedback.
More complex presentations may require additional sessions. We will outline a plan after intake.
Usually not. A high-quality ADHD assessment requires an intake and history session, information from multiple informants including school, and one or more structured assessment sessions.
We will outline an assessment plan after intake.
Yes. Girls are more likely to present with inattentive symptoms, internalised anxiety, or high-achieving compensation that mask ADHD, even when things appear to be going well on the surface.
Our clinicians are experienced in identifying these presentations.
Yes, where clinically indicated. ADHD and autism frequently co-occur, and a combined assessment can be more efficient while still providing a complete clinical picture.
We will clarify priorities and design the most appropriate pathway after intake.
Following your written report, we hold a dedicated feedback session to walk through the findings, answer your questions, and support you in planning next steps, including sharing the report with your GP, school, or treating team where relevant.
