Support for reading and spelling

What we do

Sounds-Write Program

The Sounds-Write Program is a structured synthetic program based on the science of reading. It is a multi-sensory, code-oriented and comprehensive approach to literacy.

There are 7 Units in the Sounds-Write program and each unit focuses on developing phonemic awareness, which is the ability to recognise and manipulate sounds in spoken words. The approach is designed to help children connect sounds with their written representations more effectively, promoting literacy and spelling skills.

The Sounds-Write approach is helpful for early readers and spellers and children with learning disabilities such as intellectual disabilities and dyslexia. It builds a solid foundation of how speech sounds and written words are connected. By practising sound segmentation, symbol recognition, and blending, students become more confident readers and writers.

Sound Segmentation

Students break words down into individual sounds (phonemes). For example, the word "cat" would be broken into three sounds: /k/, /æ/, and /t/.

Sound-to-Symbol Correspondence

After segmenting the sounds, students learn the letters or letter combinations (graphemes) that correspond to those sounds. In the case of "cat," the sounds /k/, /æ/, and /t/ are represented by the letters "c," "a," and "t.

Blending

After identifying the sounds and the corresponding letters, students blend them back together to form words. This process is called "blending," and it helps in spelling and reading.

Pattern Recognition

As students advance, they start recognizing patterns in words, such as common letter combinations (like "sh," "ch," or "oo") or rules (like silent letters). This helps them improve both their spelling and decoding abilities.

Application

Students are encouraged to apply these skills to read and write unfamiliar words, promoting independent literacy skills.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The Sounds-Write program has 7 units. Each client will work through these units are their own pace. It is difficult to say how long someone needs to complete the units due to the variability in presentations.

It is recommended that sessions are weekly to maintain consistency and repetition of learnt material. There are opportunities to attend fortnightly on request.

We recognise the cost of attending tutoring is expensive and would like to offer the opportunity for the community to be able to access support at a lower cost.

Children can attend in a small group of two children with one clinician following an assessment. The Sounds-Write clinician will assess your child and then decide if it is possible for them to join sessions with a child at a similar level. Please let us know if you would like a small group option for Sounds-Write.

The intake to service is 1.5 hours long, and the Sounds-Write Assessment is an hour face-to-face with 30 minutes allocated for scoring and session planning (1.5 hours in total).

Following the above appointments, ongoing sessions are 45 minutes in length with 15 minutes of non-face-to-face programming and planning time (1 hour charge).

Sounds-Write is a recommended program for children who are:

  • delayed in their reading and writing at school.
  • are presenting with a learning disability and are requiring 6 months of intervention before undergoing an assessment.
  • diagnosis with an intellectual disability who require extra reading support.
  • diagnosed with a learning disability such as dyslexia.
