Multidisciplinary team
When learning difficulties overlap with other developmental needs, our psychologists draw on the wider expertise of Moi Clinic’s broader multidisciplinary practice.
Neuro-affirming approach
We celebrate identity rather than focus on deficits. Every assessment honours your child’s communication style, sensory needs, and lived experience throughout the process.
Practical, classroom-ready recommendations
Findings from our educational assessments are translated into specific strategies that teachers, parents, and support staff can put into practice straight away.

What is an educational assessment?
Evaluate your child’s academic and social-emotional profile
When a child is struggling at school, it isn’t always obvious why. An educational assessment looks at academic performance alongside social-emotional functioning to work out what’s actually going on, rather than treating the difficulty as a single, isolated problem.
For many families, a key question is whether a child’s profile meets the threshold for a Specific Learning Disorder (SLD). Our psychologists work through that question carefully, using the findings to shape recommendations the school can act on straight away.
What we assess
The areas evaluated in an educational assessment
No single test tells the whole story. Our psychologists build a learning profile from several angles, so the picture from our educational assessment reflects your child rather than a single score.
Academic achievement
How reading, writing, and numeracy skills compare to what’s expected for your child’s age and year level, pinpointing where the gap actually sits.
Learning difficulties and developmental delays
Whether a pattern consistent with a specific learning disorder is present, in reading, written expression, or maths, and whether a formal diagnosis fits.
Social-emotional functioning
How your child’s emotional wellbeing and social relationships are shaping their experience of school, which often explains more than academic results alone.
Behavioural factors
Whether behaviour in the classroom, with instructions, or with peers reflects a learning difficulty, something else entirely, or a combination of both.
Who we assess
Tailored to every stage of school

Preschool and kindergarten
The years before school start are when developmental differences are easiest to act on. An assessment now means kindergarten and the first years of school begin with the right plan already in place.

Primary school
Primary school is where literacy and numeracy foundations are built, and where gaps tend to widen if left unaddressed. An assessment identifies exactly where your child needs support before that happens.

High school and secondary
Secondary school demands more independence and a heavier academic load. An assessment can explain why that shift has been harder for your teenager than expected, and what adjustments would help.
Our Assessment Tools
The instruments behind our educational assessments
We draw on internationally recognised, evidence-based instruments, chosen according to your child’s age and the specific question we are trying to answer.
ADOS-2
Structured observational assessment of social communication and behaviour.
MIGDAS-2
Sensory and developmental assessment, particularly for complex or subtle profiles.
SRS-2
Measurement of social responsiveness and autistic traits across the lifespan.
WPPSI-IV, WISC-V, WAIS-IV
Structured cognitive ability assessment for children and adults respectively to understand learning and functioning.

Why Moi Clinic?
A safe space for mental health support
For over 30 years, families across Melbourne have brought us the question every parent eventually asks: why is school harder for my child than it should be? We treat that question with the seriousness it deserves.
We’re not interested in handing back a score and moving on. A good educational assessment changes what happens in the classroom on Monday, and that’s the standard we hold every report to.
Our educational assessment process
What to expect from an educational assessment
We know handing your child over for testing can feel daunting. Here’s exactly what the process looks like, so there are no surprises along the way.
01
Intake & Relationship Building
Before any testing happens, we sit down with you to understand the history, what the school has already tried, and what you’re hoping this assessment will answer.
02
Personalised Assessment Process
Your psychologist works directly with your child across one or more sessions, using age-appropriate tools to build a genuine picture of how they learn, not just what they score.
03
Report Writing & Feedback
You’ll receive a written report explaining what we found in easy to understand language, followed by a session where we walk through it together and talk through what it means for school and home.
Our Practitioners
The psychologists behind our educational assessments
Each assessment is led by a registered psychologist experienced in academic and developmental testing, from the early years of school through to high school.

No, a referral isn’t required to book in.
If you’re hoping to claim a rebate or you’re already working with another service, get in touch and we’ll talk through what paperwork applies to your situation.
We see children across preschool and kindergarten, primary school, and high school. Every assessment is shaped around your child’s age and stage, not a fixed script.
It depends on what we’re trying to find out and how complex the picture is. We’ll map out a plan together once we understand your child’s situation at intake.
Results from each area we tested, an honest picture of your child’s strengths and difficulties, and recommendations specific enough for a classroom teacher to act on.
The report is written so it makes sense to you, not just to other clinicians.
Yes, if that’s what the results support. We look at academic testing alongside cognitive and developmental information to work out whether your child meets the criteria.
Where a diagnosis is appropriate, it opens the door to formal classroom adjustments and additional support.
With your permission, yes. Teacher input often adds useful context, and we’re happy to share the finished report with the school so the recommendations actually get used.
Yes. Nothing said in sessions goes beyond your psychologist without your explicit say-so.
